The Internet of Things (IoT) is a conceptual term refering to the increasing interconnection of smart devices to other devices or to application services and systems, generally using some from of internet communcations protocols. These smart devices are often connected to real-world objects via sensors and actuators and are becoming increasingly sophisticated in the types of processing and function they can perform.

The IoT allows the smart devices to be interconnected with application systems to provide a new generation of smart application systems that integrate with a wide variety of real-world applications, often without direct human intervention.
